The daily report is the most important document a foreman produces. It is the record of who worked, where, on what, and what got in the way. It feeds time cards, job cost, change orders and — when a schedule is argued months later — the claim. And at many subcontractors, it is the document most likely to be late, thin, or missing.
Why foremen skip it
- It takes too long. A twenty-minute form on a phone at the end of a ten-hour day doesn’t get done well.
- It asks for the same thing twice. Crew names typed on the sign-in sheet, again on the daily, again on the time card.
- It doesn’t match how they think. Generic forms ask for fields the trade doesn’t use and miss the ones it does.
- Nothing happens with it. If the office never responds to what’s written, the report becomes a box to tick.
What actually fixes it
1. Enter it once
The crew list should carry forward from yesterday. Hours entered on the daily should become the time card. Material noted as received should update the purchase order. When one entry lands in five places, the report stops being extra work.
2. Fit the trade
A plumbing foreman, an HVAC foreman and a drywall foreman describe their day differently. The form should use the cost codes, areas and phases they already use.
3. Make it fast on a phone
Big targets, few required fields, photos straight from the camera, and the ability to save and finish later. Test it in a truck, not in the office.
4. Close the loop
When a foreman flags a delay or extra work, the PM should see it the same day — and the foreman should see that someone acted on it.
How Kreaiten approaches it
In Kreaiten, the foreman’s daily report is the source for sign-in sheets, time cards, job cost and the project record, so information is entered once and flows to the places that need it. Because each company’s system is built around how it runs, the daily report matches the trade and the company’s own cost codes rather than a generic template.
